PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR COMMUNITY CENTER

About Us

The Paul Laurence Dunbar Community Center was founded by a group of African-American men and women from the Butler community.  They saw a need for social and recreational programs for adults and youth that soon broadened to include persons of all races, creeds, and religions.  The Arnette A.M.E. Church and Shiloh Baptist Church offered their facilities to support the program as well as Pullman Standard Corporation.

In 1936 the organization became a Community Chest Agency, currently the United Way of Butler County.  An official charter was granted in 1939.  The name is in honor of the great African-American Poet, Paul Laurence Dunbar.

Community volunteers continue to play an important role in the succesful operation of the Center by giving of their time and expertise to the youth and adults enrolled in the scheduled program of activities In addition to United Way assistance, the Center is also supported by annual membership  fees by participants and donations from the general public.  Its youth programs are funded in part by Butler County Community Action.
